Plot Summary
Raju (also known as Railway Raju) is a well-known unscrupulous tour guide. He falls in love with Rosie, the wife of archaeologist Marco, a gorgeous dancer. They arrived in Malgudi, a fictitious town in South India, as tourists. Marco disapproves of Rosie’s dance passion. Rosie, encouraged by Raju, chooses to pursue her ambition of becoming a dancer. They become close to each other as a result of the process. Marco abandons Rosie in Malgudi and returns to Madras alone after learning of their relationship. Rosie appears at Raju’s house and the two begin living together. However, Raju’s mother disapproves of their relationship and abandons them.
Raju becomes Rosie’s stage manager, and with Raju’s marketing strategies, Rosie quickly becomes a successful dancer. Raju, on the other hand, develops an inflated sense of self-importance and attempts to exert control over her life. He desires to amass as much wealth as possible. Despite Rosie’s best attempts to save him, Raju is charged with forgery of Rosie’s signature and sentenced to two years in prison.
After finishing the sentence, Raju goes through Mangal, where he is misidentified as a sadhu (a spiritual guide). He decides to stay at an abandoned temple near the village rather than return to Malgudi in disgrace. He acts as a Sadhu there, delivering sermons and discourses to the locals and resolving their day-to-day concerns and disputes.
There is soon a famine in the hamlet, and the residents have the idea that Raju would fast in order to make it rain. Raju tells Velan the complete truth about his background. Velan, like the rest of the villagers, initially encountered Raju in the temple and established faith in him. The confession has no effect on Velan, and Raju decides to continue the fast.
With the media advertising his fast, a large audience comes to see him fast (much to Raju’s chagrin). He travels to the riverfront as part of his daily ritual on the eleventh day of fasting. He feels rain falling in the hills in the distance and sinks under the water. It is uncertain and unverified whether or not it rained, or if Raju perished. It is up to the reader to make their own interpretation.
